TOP 20 OF 2021

GOAT GIRL

Goat Girl are a London-based four-piece who dropped their second album, On All Fours, back in January of 2021. They emerged from the gritty post-punk scene of Brixton’s The Windmill alongside the likes of Squid and black midi, but have taken the experimental approach that those bands have in common in a new direction. They’ve started to bring more electronic influences into their work, with the back-to-back tracks ‘P.T.S.Tea’ and ‘Sad Cowboy’ using synths to form vital parts of their tight arrangements. They’ve also forged an impressive ability to juxtapose their music with their often politically-charged lyrics. ‘Badibaba’ features bouncy backing vocals and playful off-beat drum patterns, but its lyrics and L.E.D’s vocal tone certainly don’t reflect this. They’ve also pulled off the impressive feat of simultaneously becoming more melodic, and more eclectic all at once. (Photo taken by: Holly Whitaker, Set Design: Flo White) -Dan Peeke
